Main Text:

The 2nd phase of the project intends to consolidate a model of intervention in cultural and artistic expression. It intends to consolidate the dual strategy proposed in the first pilot phase of the project:
ü Using culture as a useful tool to increase young people's sensitivity to values such as human rights and intercultural dialogue. The involvement of new generations through theatre and the resulting increase in the production of culture represent the strategic element of the Project;
ü Develop and implement a training model for youth, aiming to create the concrete contexts in which they are able to work together, doing cultural activities and producing an active culture, with the aim of promoting their development and their social and work inclusion.

During the first phase of activity, it was decided to focus primarily on theatrical component considering the pilot nature of the initiative. In the second stage we will deepen the training in multimedia arts as part of the training path implemented.
The idea is based on the ability with which young Palestinians are already using new technologies. The same technologies that accompany them in daily life can become their means of production. With particular reference to the artistic field, the ability in using simple and relatively low-cost tools can help, simplify and in some cases make the work possible.
In general, given the experience made so far, we consider the Palestinian National Theatre as the frame of an artistic laboratory where youth can develop their creativity in many forms.

Approach
Section 3 Text:

The project is structured on three components: capacity building and rehabilitation of institutions and local organizations involved in the implementation of the project; promoting the rights of adolescents and youth with emphasis on gender issues and territorial development (with the involvement of local theatres, already available and operating in the country); the artistic interchange both among Palestinian theatres, and relations with Italy and networking in the Mediterranean basin.
The main area of activity is the training. The planning of the action is very simple:
1)      Launching of the announcement
2)      Collection of the application forms
3)      Selection of the students
4)      Summer intensive training:
v Theatre: I level
v Theatre: II level
v Multimedia
5)      Production

Main Text:

This project was born according to a specific request made by the Palestinian National Theatre – El Hakawati (PNT), by the Palestinian Authority to the Italian Office for Cooperation and Development to support theatrical institutions and cultural spaces in East Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories and to give voice to young people interested in the artistic field, with particular attention to the involvement of young women.
A first-time collaboration and innovative way of working. This is part of an overall strategy in which Culture as a resource is one of the most important conditions for ensuring sustainable economic development and a path towards peace, justice, self-affirmation and the full realization of Human Rights.
This initiative therefore is in the framework of the Italian commitment in supporting this sector.

Results Achieved
Section 3 Text:

The first pilot phase (2008/2009) achieved great results: 32 youth were successfully trained; 8 Palestinian professional artists were employed by the PNT.
The performance produced ‘On the Footsteps of Hamlet’ was the first Palestinian mise-en-scène of W. Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It was presented in Jerusalem, in the Palestinian Territories and in the Galilee in 2009 receiving a lot of attention by audiences and critiques inside and outside the Palestinian Territories.
The different phases of the theatre laboratories were also hosted by: Inteatro – Polverigi; Venice Biennale; Teatro Regionale Alessandrino; Theatre of the Paolo Grassi Drama Academy in Milan and by Teatro Valle in Rome opening interesting collaborations with Italian theatres of excellence.
